UBC PUMP HOUSE

RELOCATION OF EXISTING PUMPS

Architect: Stantec

Client: University of British Columbia

2018/ 2019

A Post Disaster Structure

This project is located in UBC Campus & is a post disaster structure to maintain potable water and firefighting supply to campus. The building footprint is minimized to a maximum of 2 stories to fit the small site proposed by the client. The architectural language had to follow a similar language of the academic context. The building composition has been reduced to three main components; perforated screen, metal panel (solid element) & transparent glass.

Elevations

The project went through different design iteration. The initial moves of the project were to create a free form mass that took inspiration from basic engineering conveyance principles, create visual transparency interior color to draw the curious in, LED lights connected to flow meter to subtly show change in water use intensity, drinking water fountain sited along university boulevard with

The building features a durable, low maintenance building materials appropriate for infrastructure projects improves life cycle costs (curtain wall system with metal screen). The screen shape has developed & took inspiration from the shape of an impeller; this later on informed the pattern of the screen perforations.

Initially, the screen enclosure was inspired by measures of water pressure profiles. The screen then took a simpler form to fit in the context of the proposed site.

marker plaque and color scheme that relates to the interior color, & use of computational design techniques to generate screen pattern (Rhino & Grasshopper)
